Kahnawake Ready To Open For Business on Monday

Written by on 31 May 2020

There have been a total of 18 positive cases of COVID-19 in Kahnawake since the pandemic began in March, including one active case. Kateri Memorial Hospital Center Executive Director Lisa Westaway says the COVID-19 Task Force factored that in to their decision to allow businesses to begin to reopen in the community.

“There have been no hospitalization and no deaths,” Westaway said.

The Task Force has continually said that they enacted strict guidelines by following the science behind the pandemic. Now the reason for reopening is due to a multitude of factors, including the mental health of the population as well as the economy.

“There are 921 people who are receiving financial suport through the Kahnawake emergency relief fund,” she said. “We also know and by next week we will have spent over five million dollars in economic support. This money will not exist foreveer and the possible lack of these funds in the future could have drastic impacts on our community.”

18 900 hot meals have been delivered in the community throughout, an average of 300 per day.
