KSCS opens direct line to call-in counselling services

Community members seeking mental health or addictions support no longer need to call the Peacekeepers to access a counselor during the week.
“The beauty of this service is that you don’t need to have a file open and all of that,” said David Martel the Supervisor for Psychological Services at Kahnawake Shakotiia’takehnhas Community Services. “You can just pick up the phone and give a call.”
In a daily briefing on Saturday, Martel said (KSCS) has started a direct phone-in line for “Let’s Talk Kahnawake” to connect community members with support councillors.
Martel said since the pandemic began, KSCS has seen a slight reduction in the volume of requests for services. He said one of the reasons could be that some individuals may not have the privacy at home to seek out services since they are now being offered online or by phone.
While the number of requests for services might be slightly down, Martel said COVID-19 is an ‘amplifying factor’ for those battling mental health and addictions.
“The pandemic adds layers to those problems that are preexisting,” he said.
The call-in support line is open Monday to Thursday from 5-8 pm at 514-235-9607.

Martel said KSCS has an outreach project coming up to find out more about how COVID is impacting the community.
