Written by on 10 February 2021

There are five active cases of COVID-19 in Kahnawake as of Tuesday evening. Three of those are from the Step By Step Child and Family Center outbreak that was announced on Saturday. “All are doing well,” Lisa Westaway, the Executive Director of the Kateri Memorial Hospital Center (KMHC), said Tuesday on Kahnawake 911. “The children are in isolation until the 16th inclusively, as well as a family member.

Westaway says that contact tracing has been completed and the public health team is closely monitoring the situation.

“You may see a family members within the same household of that child, who are walking around or going to work. Every single family has a different scenario, a different situation. All of these families have spoken with public health.”

Meanwhile despite a scarcity of the vaccine in Canada, things remain on track for Kahnawake to deliver as promised for those who want it. “We still confirm that we will vaccinate either all 16 and up or 17 and up from the community by March 31st,” Westaway said. “We are still awaiting vaccine and this is not a political issue. This is a problem in all of Canada, we have not received very many vaccines. There is a shortage at the present time as companies are ramping up production. We expect deliveries to resume next week. We should get more information in the coming weeks regarding vaccination and how to book your appointments.”

There have been over 100 positive COVID-19 cases in Kahnawake in the 11 months since the beginning of the pandemic. but the number of hospitalizations and deaths remain at zero. Mohawk Council of Kahnawake Elected Official Clinton Phillips with words of encouragement for the community on Kahnawake 911. “Everybody at home who is doing everything possible you need to be applauded. You need to have that pat on your back,” Phillips said. “Because without your help, without your buy-in we would not be where we are today.”
