COVID-19 Cases up to 17 in Kahnawake

Written by on 6 May 2021

There are 17 active cases of COVID-19 in Kahnawake. Most of those are in the youth population under the age of 20, according to the COVID-19 Task Force.

“It’s certainly alarming,” Commissioner of Public Safety Lloyd Phillips told K1037 News. “I think it’s the second highest number of active cases we had since the beginning of the pandemic. Again it’s just a sign that we must remain vigilant and follow safety measures. It’s concerning as well because of the younger age group that are being primarily impacted by COVID. That shows that the spread of the virus is a real thing and even more so with the variants.”

The Vaccination Center at the Bingo Hall on the 138 will reopen next week for the scheduled second doses of the Pfizer vaccine for employees of the Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre, Kahnawà:ke Shakotiia’takéhnhas Community Services, the Kahnawà:ke Fire Brigade, and the Peacekeepers. And due to the outbreaks amongst youth, there will be 25 extra doses available for 16 and 17-year-olds next Thursday and Friday by appointment only at: Kahnawake911/vaccine and clicking on Clic Sante.  “We are able toe xpand that to that age group,” Phillips said. “They had their first opportunity a few weeks back. Now we are able to get some more doses for 16, 17. So by all means people can go on-line and schedule an appointment.”
