  • MCK Condemns RCMP Action on Wet’suwet’en Territory

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke has condemned the unwarranted and aggressive actions taken by the RCMP and Coastal GasLink as an affront to the Wet’suwet’en on their traditional Territory.

The MCK says no one wants a repeat of events in 2020, when anger and frustration with the RCMP’s heavy handed actions boiled over into protests across the country.

The MCK continues to advocate for common sense solutions that come from face-to-face discussion at the appropriate levels.

“It often takes great patience and wisdom to come to a suitable resolve,” said Ohén:ton Í:iente ne Ratitsénhaienhs (Grand Chief) Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer. “Canada must act quickly to bring an immediate end to the current volatile situation by working diligently with leadership to find a solution that all sides can accept.”

The MCK wishes points out that during the winter of 2020, a ceremony was held to formalize a relationship between the Wet’suwet’en Traditional Chiefs and the Mohawk Nation at Kahnawà:ke. The MCK is committed to respecting and supporting this relationship by remaining available to offer its assistance, should this be requested.

  • Peacekeepers Still Consider Girl From Kahnawake Who Was Subject of Amber Alert as Missing

Further developments in the Dasia Rose Diabo case coming from The Kahnawake Peacekeepers this afternoon. K1037 has learned that according to the Peacekeepers, they received the initial report at 3:27 pm, with investigators contacting the Sûreté du Québec. This began the process of issuing an Amber Alert. When the alert was issued at 5:59 pm, the subject and suspect were at the United States Customs Office in Highgate Springs, Vermont. Because the child was located and determined to not be in danger, the Amber Alert was cancelled. The Peacekeepers were later advised that the subject and the suspect were allowed to leave the customs office, because documentation regarding custody agreements were not considered official. The investigation is on-going and charges related to the incident are to be determined. The Kahnawake Peacekeepers still consider Diabo missing at this time.  Dasia  turns eight years old tomorrow (Tuesday). The file remains active, and the Peacekeepers are investigating.

Now the council will meet with each affected department to, as per an MCK press release, quote: “act accordingly and exercise obligation to apply appropriate corrective measures that ensure a safer future for lands in the Territory.”

Cody Diabo is the elected official on the asbestos file:

“There’s a few recommendations and it’s important to note that it’s not say like a singular incident that it just a systemic failure on the MCK over time. So, it’s not something that just happened last year or the year before, this is a long process that sort of compounded and compounded kind of like when you’re renovating your house and all of a sudden the roof is gone and all kinds of stuff, but really it started with a small leak, that leak didn’t get fixed, it got bigger and bigger and now all of a sudden you need a new roof.”

Diabo is hopeful that the executive summary of the ‘Final Report’ will be made available to the community in about 2 weeks. Back in May of this year, the MCK engaged Deloitte to begin their independent investigation.
