  • KMHC Criticisms

In the wake of receiving the highest accreditation possible for a hospital or health care facility, the Kateri Memorial Hospital Center has come under some recent public criticism that has been making the rounds on social media, even prompting a meeting of the people in Kahnawake on Monday evening. Arnold Lazare is a Co-Chair of the KMHC Board of Directors:

“For the record, there is no elder abuse at the hospital. What we do have is some social media posts have highlighted some of the challenges primarily due to Covid. I know people are tired of hearing that excuse, but there has been challenges, but we’re led to believe some false accusations of how the patients are treated. If we ever hear, it’s thoroughly investigated immediately.”

The KMHC Board of Directors saying, in a news release, they are aware that accidents are bound to happen and those statistics are public knowledge – all while maintaining patient confidentiality. K1037 News has spoken with an unofficial representative of some of the families who are upset – and we are awaiting a response.

  • Pier Work Causes Service Road Detour Underneath Mercier Bridge

The 132/138 West service road underneath the Mercier Bridge in Kahnawake will be completely closed tonight (Wednesday) from 10 pm to 5 am tomorrow. It’s to reconfigure the road as rehabilitation of the piers underneath the bridge gets underway.

“Starting tomorrow morning, when you’re travelling down the 132/138 West, you will need to start using the new detour in place,” Mark Standup, the Safety Officer in charge of traffic management with the Mohawk Bridge Consortium (MBC), told K1037 News. “It will be properly signed. It’s just before the CPR bridge. You’ll do a loop. There’s a traffic light there. Once you pass the light you’ll continue on the normal traffic. But it’s important to remember to watch the signage because everyone is used to just making the straight run. There is now a detour that will be in place as of tomorrow morning.”

Standup says the pier rehabilitation will take two full seasons to complete.

“This detour will be in place from tomorrow morning until mid-December, 2022,” Standup said. “The service road will be reopened at that time for the winter months and will be re-closed next spring (2023) for the entire summer season. Same detour will  be put back into place.”

  • Des Cultures Wind Farm To Generate $1 Million a Year for Kahnawà:ke

Kahnawà:ke’s new wind farm in St Remi and St-Michel was officially dedicated on Monday. The $70 million dollar project has been in the works for nearly 20 years, but only got underway in the spring of 2018. The six turbines can power 2500 homes a year. They will generate economic benefits to Kahnawà:ke.

“In terms of dollars back into the community, we’re expecting approximately $1 million a year to start with,” Bud Morris, the CEO of Tewatohnhi’saktha and President of Kahnawà:ke Sustainable Energies, told K1037 News. “Then as we tune the turbines to get greater efficiency that number should increase. It will also increase due to the inflationary adjustments in our contract.”

Mike Delisle of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke says a project like this, while bringing in economic benefits to the community, is more about the environment.

“People talk about it as the wave of the future and it’s something we need to concentrate on,” Delisle said. “It’s the wave of the past now being concentrated on and it’s part of our heritage to ensure that we leave not only our grandchildren but seven generations forward something to be proud of and something that will be sustainable.”

  • 31st Indigenous Firefighters Competition a Success in Kahnawake

The 31st Indigenous Firefighters Competition for the Quebec region was held at Karonhianonhnha School on Saturday. Gesgapegiag was third.

Lieutenant Karonhiio Curotte was the Captain and trainer of the KFB team. “They did an amazing job,” Curotte said. “Considering two of them have no training as a firefighter, the other two have never done it beforehand there was only one veteran that was competing, they did an amazing job. I’m so proud of them.”

Curotte says the two who have no training are signed up to train to join the KFB.

The all women crew from Kawawachikamach was fourth. Not bad considering they traveled 1150 kms south to be in Kahnawake.
