Condolences Pouring In Following the Death of Former NHLer Gino Odjick
Tributes from around the NHL and Indigenous communities pouring in following the passing of Wayne “Gino” Odjick at the age of 52. Drafted in 1990 Odjick played 12 seasons in the NHL for the Vancouver Canucks, New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers and Montreal Canadiens. In 2014, he was diagnosed with Amyloidosis —a rare terminal illness that causes a gelatin-like protein to be deposited in the heart muscle. The former enforcer had 64 goals and 73 assists in 605 NHL games.
Another Former NHL star Reggie Leach followed Odjick’s career and became friendly with him.
He says it’s a loss for everyone, especially Indigenous youth.
“The time I did spend with Gino, he was such a kind and loving man,” Leach told K1037 News. “As a hockey player he knew his job and he did it really well, but I think it was more than that. It was what he did after hockey and what he did off the ice. To me it was more rewarding to see what he has done with different First Nations communities. The people he made feel welcome all the time. He did everything with his heart and it made him this very, very special man.”
Daniel Montour of Kahnawake has been friends with Odjick since 1994. That friendship began when Montour showed kindness and hospitality to Odjick’s father Joe. “I was in shock, disbelief,” Montour said. “I knew he was sick but I didn’t expect it would happen hen it did. I talked to him every week. Once a week we speak, either he calls me or I call him. The last time I spoke to him was New Year’s day. He had a strong voice, like always. I asked him how he was feeling? ‘I’m good Danny Boy,’ We wished each other Happy New Year and he wished Happy New Year to my family and said: ‘I’ll talk to you again,’ And that was the last time that I spoke to him”
Former K1037 personality Andy Ellison hosted a wrestling show in Kahnawake in the mid 2000’s – when he faced Abdullah the Butcher in the ring.
“Gino was a great guy. I got to know him through his appearance in Kahnawake when he was in my corner for a match against Abdullah the Butcher,” Ellison said. “He was always someone who helped the community, no matter what he was going through. It was a great night. I developed a strong relationship with him moving forward. It was a great match, myself versus Abdullah the Butcher with the legendary Gino Odjick in my corner.”

Subban Gets A Kahnawake Honour
The Montreal Canadiens honoured PK Subban prior to last night’s game against the Nashville Predators and the celebration had a Kahnawake component. Subban was presented with a beaded Montreal Canadiens medallion that was designed and made by Kyle Phillips of Kahnawake. Phillips says it was pretty cool to see his work modelled by one of his hockey heroes:
“Right now, I have tons of orders, so I don’t really have time to take extra orders, but when he messaged, I just had to take the order right away because I’m a big fan of PK Subban and it was just amazing to see.”
Tyler Gilbert of Kahnawake placed the order with Phillips. Gilbert also got the chance to present the medallion to Subban:
“I just knew that I would have the opportunity to run into him, it wasn’t a thousand percent guarantee that I was going to be able to present it to him. I knew somebody that was working with him and that there would be the chance that I’d have the opportunity to, so, I made sure that chance happened.”

Hydro-Quebec’s CEO Resigns: Sky-Deer Reacts
The president and CEO of Hydro-Québec, Sophie Brochu, announced that she will be stepping down from her position effective April 11th. Brochu did not specify the reasons for her departure in a letter sent to employees this morning. Ohénton ĺ:iente ne Ratitsénhaienhs Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer on what the future holds:
“I don’t know who is going to be the next CEO, but it’s just disappointing because I really felt that as 2 women in leadership we’d seen eye-to-eye on a lot of things and there was a lot of good momentum that I was hoping that we would build on moving into this year and hopefully beyond, just really disappointed. I wish her the best, obviously people come to these kind of decisions not very lightly and obviously there must have been something driving her that this was the best decision for her and maybe even the company. I don’t know, there wasn’t no expressed reasoning in her, from what I’ve seen so far in the media, so I guess time will tell.”
Brochu was instrumental in working with Kahnawake on the Champlain Hudson Power Express transmission line. Kahnawake and Hydro Announced back in May of 2021, a new partnership that will see the construction and joint ownership of the Hertel Line. The 58 kilometre, 400-kv underground transmission line will run from the Hertel Substation in La Prairie, Québec to the U.S. Border before heading down to NYC. Hydro released a statement from Brochu that stated: “The turmoil of the pandemic is largely behind us and Hydro-Québec is in a good position today: we have a strategic plan that sets the course for Quebec’s energy transition and the company’s financial situation is excellent. The time has come to pass the torch.”

Peacekeepers Discourage Gunshots to Ring in New Year
We will be ringing in the New Year late Saturday night. In Kahnawake, it has become a tradition for several community members to fire off their weapons to celebrate at midnight.
Kyle Zachary is the Public Relations Officer with the Kahnawake Peacekeepers. He says that people must keep safety in mind. “It’s a no-brainer why we’re discouraging the practice, Zachary said. “Some of the projectiles from a firearm can travel anywhere up to and including one kilometer. That puts everybody in the surrounding community and even our neighbouring communities in danger so we discourage the practice. The Peackeepers will have additional patrols out on New Year’s Eve. We’re going to do our best but we need the help from our residents and the members of our community to look out for one another and to celebrate as safely as they can.”
There have been numerous reports of property damage and some near misses in recent years as a result of the gunshots.
