The PK’s and KSCS’s ‘Sober Drive Initiative: A Success
The Kahnawake Peacekeeper’s encourage the community to continue to make safe choices, if you choose to consume, have a designated driver. This as the statistics from the PK’s were released today on rides provided during this past weekends Pow-Wow. Kyle Zachary is a spokesperson with the Peacekeepers:
“I had taken a meeting with a couple representatives from KSCS earlier the week before on an initiative that they had come up with to provide a safe ride home for people who were going to be consuming alcohol or other substances during the celebrations that follow the Pow-Wow especially on the Friday and Saturday nights. There were a lot of events planned around the community and the goal was to minimize peoples’ impaired driving within the territory.”
Zachary saying that many community members were provided with safe rides home:
“Come Monday morning, they updated us that they provided 54 rides to individuals within the community. During that time we conducted spot-check operations; we opened 3 separate interceptions of vehicles to check for impaired driving and we did have to make 1 arrest. But, one arrest compared to giving 54 rides home, those are good numbers to us. We’re really happy about that.”
The PK’s worked along with KSCS and their: ‘Sober Drive Initiative.’

33 Years On: History Changed In The Pines
33 years ago today, history was changed in the Pines in Kanesatake. In studio on Tetewatharen, the party line talk show today on K1037, with host Peggy Mayo Standup, Ellen Gabriel was the guest. Gabriel reminiscing about the Oka crisis and why don’t we teach our youth about what went down:
“I don’t know why, the community schools, especially the ones that are directly impacted are not teaching this and not asking the people who were there, ‘what happened,’ because I think a lot of youth have the wrong impression of what this was about. I think a lot of them think it’s about guns and weapons and it’s like, no, it started in March, we had a lot of community discussions. The women agreed when the police arrived that they would go to the front and we did, with our arms in the air to show them that we didn’t have weapons, we told them that the people are not leaving.”
Gabriel on the deception and blame that continues:
“All the games that the colonizer has played over centuries of lying to us and them blaming us for the inconvenienced motorists the inconvenienced people, in Kanesatake and I say Kanesatake, because people call it the ‘Oka Crisis’ but it’s not.”
Akwirente Deer was in Kahnawake at the time. This morning he and several of the warriors from that day, as well as others are at the Greenspace on the 132 at the foot of the Mercier Bridge to remind people of the beginning of the crisis.

A Community Stakeholders Consultation will be held tonight at the Golden Age Club from 6pm to 8:30pm. Allan John Rice is the Executive Operations Officer with the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake on what’ s on the agenda:
“When the law goes back through the CDMP process, essentially what we’re doing is asking Community Stakeholders to come and verify the changes and amendments that were requested as far back as 2 years ago. There were some amendments requested by community members and by different Stakeholders of the elections: the Electoral Officer, Office of Council of Chiefs and MCK Justice. Some of those are meant to make the procedural aspects of the election go a lot smoother, others were different parts of the law that community members elected to change. So, today, we’re looking to get the scope of the work that’s going to happen and to get an actual mandate from the community to go there make amendments to the Election Law.”
Rice saying that there will be a selection of three (3) Community Representatives to sit on the Technical Drafting Committee. The purpose of the Law is intended to provide the criteria and procedures for the nomination and selection of a twelve (12) member Council, composed of eleven Ratitsénhaienhs and Ohén:ton Í:iente ne Ratitsénhaienhs. The scope is to assist with managing the election process as efficiently and effectively as possible.
