Safety Improving at Town Rink

It’s out with the old and in with the new at the Kahnawake town rink. The decades old wooden bleachers on the North side of the rink were torn down over the last two weeks. MacKenzie Whyte is the General Manager of Recreation at the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake. “We removed the grandstand at the town rink due to safety concerns. It was a very old structure and there were a lot of gaps where an infant or child could fall and hurt themselves in addition to the great height that the structure was,” Whyte said.

They will be installed in the spring. “They’re currently at the arena. They’re around the new baseball diamond if anybody was wondering what those six bleachers were there for? Four of them will be going to the town rink. We will be placing them two on each side. The issue now is that we are going to have to make a foundation of sorts to improve the vantage points because the bleachers are short,” Whyte said. The cost of the project is $22 000.
