Peacekeeper Chief Tests Positive for COVID-19

Written by on 4 January 2021

There are nine active cases of COVID-19 in Kahnawake. One of those who is positive is a member of the Kahnawake COVID-19 Task Force.

“I did test positive,” said Kahnawake Peacekeeper Chief Dwayne Zacharie. “I can confirm that I do have it. I did test positive. I’m home isolating and doing everything that I need to do in order to get back into day-to-day life. I want to make sure that I’m safe so that everyone else can be safe as well.”

Zacharie says his symptoms began with a headache on December 28th. It progressed to body aches and a temporary loss of a sense of smell.

“I was actually in shock but the moment I started to feel ill I immediately started to isolate,” he said “I told everybody in my household that they had to stay away from me, that they can’t come near my room. I was concerned, but I was still kind of hopeful that it was something else but it ended up being COVID-19. I just want people to know that just because you get COVID-19 it’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s nothing to feel bad about. But what you must do is you must immediately make all the contacts that you have to such as Public Health, get tested, follow their rules and do everything they ask you to do.”

He says he has been through contact tracing with public health but is unsure of how he caught the virus.

Zacharie says he feels well and is working from home. His isolation period comes to an end this Thursday the 7th. He plans to be back at the office the following day.
