Kahnawake Wind Farm to Generate Power as Soon as this Fall

Written by on 5 May 2021

The Kahnawake Des Cultures Wind Farm Project is set to have the windmills put up in St-Remi and St Michel beginning next month. Marissa LeBlanc, the Office and Facilities Manager at Tewatohnhi’saktha, took part in an on-line consultation Tuesday evening with members of all three communities.

It’s starting in June actually,” LeBlanc said “Starting next month the erection of the wind farm is going to start. The bases are already in. There has been a lot of prep work done already. The roads had to be slightly enlarged. They are going to be returned to normal afterwards to their original size.”

The project will generate 24 megawatts of power when it is completed. It could be ready to go on-line as early as this fall.

“We are going to have six windmills because we upgraded on the actual windmill,” LeBlanc said. “They have a power of four megawatts each and it is a 24 megawatt project so we only need six windmills. There were discussions at the beginning that there might be up to 10 depending on which model we use. This is the E-138 model. It is actually one of  the more powerful ones and is a little bit taller and bigger than the ones you currently see in St-Remi.”

LeBlanc says they are looking to hire approximately four or five Ironworkers from Kahnawake to erect the windmills.
