Indian Way Raising Money for a New School Bus

Written by on November 27, 2019

Indian Way School in Kahnawake needs a new school bus in time for next fall.

“When we had our inspection done this past year, they said this would be the last year we would be allowed to keep it on the road,” School Administrator Alma Diabo said.

Derek White allowed the school to place donation boxes in his businesses and is also digging into his own pocket.

“I just figured I’d donate $25 000,” White said. “I challenge all the businesses in town. You don’t have to match it but anything will help, 5, 10, 20 dollars just drop it off at one of the donation boxes so it starts to build. Hopefully by January maybe we will have enough to put a deposit or a down payment to make the order.”

Diabo says they have raised $36 000 so far since the beginning of the month, that includes White’s pledge.

“I’m relieved,” Diabo said. “And it’s nice that he’s challenging people to meet his $25 000. Hopefully we have some bites on that so we can’t get this over and done with and get our bus.”
