Hundreds Turnout For Walk Against Sexual Abuse

Written by on 7 August 2020

There were Hundreds of community members on the March Thursday night, including families, men, women and children.  All walking  from the tunnel along the Old Malone Highway and ended at Karonhianonha School. Those who walked in front held signs with messages such as “Our Voice Has Power” and “We Cannot Be Silenced” written on them. Many wore teal colored clothing as a symbol of solidarity for survivors. After the walk, people stood outside the entrance of Karonhianonha, where a tobacco burning ceremony took place. After a few welcoming words from the organizers, they opened the floor to the public for anyone who wanted to share their experiences. Many survivors came up and told their stories. The powerful words spoken made people at times cheer or raise their hands in the air in support of survivors. While every speaker’s experience and journey was different, they were all unanimous in making these messages clear to survivors. “You are not alone, you are strong, and you matter.”
