Extension of The State of Emergency in Kahnawà:ke

Written by on 19 October 2020

Kahnawà:ke will enter into its 7th consecutive month of a state of emergency this coming Wednesday. The current State of Emergency was formally extended for a period of 30 days at today’s duly-convened Council meeting. The Mohawk Council Resolution was passed by consensus. The passage of the Resolution includes the extension of the Mandate for the Kahnawà:ke COVID-19 Task Force. Commissioner of Public Safety Lloyd Phillips joined us on the Morning D today on K1037:

“We were hoping to evolve, as we’ve said many times before out of a state of emergency. But as we speak that’s the tool we have within the community to maintain certain measures, directives and mandates and it has to be renewed on a month by month basis. The law states 30 days and so that 30 days ends on Wednesday”

Commissioner Phillips further mentions that an eventual transition will be occurring:

“Sooner or later we will be transitioning out of a state of emergency and we’re going to need that bridge between a state of emergency and normal; there has to be something in-between and that’s what we’re working on creating.”
