Chateauguay-Kahnawake Relations: Positive Say Both

A third formal meeting was held late last week between Mohawk Council of Kahnawake Grand Chief Joe Norton, Chief Clinton Phillips and Chateauguay Mayor Pierre-Paul Routhier. Both sides qualified it as positive. They discussed the turning over of the Parcel E lands from the government from the Highway 30 transfer. Routhier says a residential project is planned in his community that will border the land. But he says he will not proceed with the project until he gets Kahnawake’s input. “It’s an inch from Parcel E, so now we are extremely close neighbours. That means we have to work together and we have to respect each other,” Routhier said. The relationship between Chateauguay and Kahnawake are much improved since Routhier became Mayor over two years ago. “I understand the fact that we are dealing with a nation beside us and it’s not just another city,” Routhier said. “It’s another reality and I respect that.” They also discussed the dismantling of Hydro’s Line 2 in both communities.
