Asbestos Problem is “Our Darkest Moment” Says MCK Chief

Written by on 14 July 2020

Sanexan Environmental Services, which specializes in the removal of asbestos containing materials is removing soil from a private property in the Lot 106 area of Kahnawake. Chief Clinton Phillips is working on the file. “It’s a mess. You won’t find one council member who is going to say anything other than it’s a mess,” Phillips said. “It was a horrible situation from the get-go and it keeps getting worse and worse every day. I have been in council for over a decade, 11 years, and let me tell you this is our darkest moment.”

The contaminated soils are being shipped by the contractor to a certified safe dump site past Drummondville. The cost of each lot cleanup is $150 000.

Phillips said there is no timetable yet for all of the lots to be cleaned up as they are still determining where there may be sites contaminated with asbestos laden pipe fragments. “We’ve got to pull up our socks and do the right thing here and make Kahnawake a clean place, a safe place,” Phillips said. “We have to ensure something like this never ever happens again. It is draining finances like an open wound. It’s just something that makes me sick.”
