9 Active Cases of COVID-19 in Kahnawake

Written by on 18 January 2021

As of Monday morning, there are nine active cases of COVID-19 in Kahnawake. That represents a decrease of a dozen people who have recovered since 21 active cases were declared at the end of last week in the community.

Commissioner of Public Safety Lloyd Phillips joining us on the Morning D on K1037. “That’s what we were saying about this whole stay home, essential services only, closing certain businesses, stop people from moving,” Phillips said. “That’s the trend that we’re glad to hear, it’s going in a better direction. If you recall at the beginning of December, we were around 9-10 (active cases), then we were up to 15 and then 20. And 20 became almost a norm, give or take a few, for several weeks. Now hopefully we’re seeing that downturn. Hopefully it’s going to continue on that trend.”

Residents at the Turtle Bay Elders Lodge will be able to emerge from nearly 19 days of isolation today. Lisa Westaway, the Executive Director of the Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre joining us on the Morning D on K1037.

“We had to wait this weekend for some results on the screenings we had done on all of the employees just to be sure that there was not somebody who was positive within the group,” Westaway said. “All the results came back negative as well for the third screen for all the employees. We’ll get the final okay from regional public health today and we’ll most likely be lifting the isolation all of the elders at the Elders Lodge.”
